Up Way Publications 42nd Anniversary

The Bible Apostolic Logo features the golden sun rising from a deep blue morning sky. The Bible as  the one foundation upon which we build and are establishes is marked open by the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Great Creator who so loved us  that He became flesh and dwelt among us, then bled and died to pay the debt for our sins. The golden sun arc doubles to represent the open tomb from  which He arose triumphant. The descending dove represents the coming of the Holy Spirit to us and the flame represents the fire and power of the Holy Spirit in the life of every true believer. When asked if we are Fundamentalist, we are more Fundamental than they. Are we Evangelistic? Very! Are we Baptist? We place a higher value on Biblical water baptism than the Baptists. Are we Pentecostal? We definitely believe in the entire of the Acts 2 experience including that the promise of 2:38 and 39 is to all that the Lord our God shall call. Are we Apostolic? Our desire and goal is to preach, teach and practice that exact same Gospel that Jesus Christ and His Original Apostles taught and would still be teaching if here in person, as we prayerfully try to be their faithful representatives. — Samuel M. Smith, Editor,
Presiding Elder

“LOST? But I Looked at the Map...

"LOST? But I Looked at the Map!"

“I think we’re lost, Honey,” says the little wife.
“No way,” he replies. “I looked at the map.”

“Well this is the first time I’ve ever seen the sun set in the East!” she retorts smuggly.

After an hour of driving which should have put them at their destination, they find themselves in a town nearly a hundred and twenty miles in the opposite direction and dangerously low on gasoline and money.

All too often this scenario takes place in our lives. We look at the map and proceed without making sure we have understood what we read. Or we stop for directions and then are unsure whether it was the third light counting this one or the third light after this one at which we are to turn.

But we are all on a journey called life and there is a road map, atlas and guidebook which is very specific and contains detailed instructions for all sorts of situations and for people coming from all different directions. A careful reading and understanding of this book brings us peace, joy, contentment, fulfillment and happiness all along life’s journey, regardless of the detours, flat tires and mechanical failures that are sure to come. Failure to understand this atlas of life, known as the Bible, very often results in frustration, grief and disaster. “But why? I read the Bible sometimes. I thought I knew what it said I should do!”

Like reading and not fully understanding the turns and forks in the road on the roadmap, so, to, it is easy to take the wrong turn by misunderstanding what God wants you to know in His Word. As with the map, the correct information is there and if carefully followed will get you safely to your destination, but if misread or misunderstood, you may make a completely wrong turn and be lost in a far more destructive way than losing your way while on a cross-country trip.

One big reason people get lost is because they try to take shortcuts. Sometimes it may appear to us that to go another way will be closer. Sometimes, someone we trusted says this is “all you have to do.” But if the road really does not go where we want to go, it is no shortcut!

There is no “shortcut” to a life of peace, joy, contentment, fulfillment and happiness on life’s road to heaven. From any given place, there is only one best way to that destination. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me…” (John 14:6).

There is only one way to Heaven given by the Apostles and preached and practiced throughout the first 120 years after Jesus returned to heaven. But even in the days of the Apostle Paul, there were some who tried to go other ways. (See Acts 13:10, Galatians 1:6-8 and 2 Timothy 4:3.)

Our roadmap clearly teaches that only Grace, the undeserved favor of God makes Salvation possible. Grace brought Jesus into the world to save mankind and is for to every human being on earth without regard to wealth, power or status. Failure to believe that Jesus came and paid the full penalty for your sin proves lack of saving faith in the Grace of God. Therefore you cannot be saved because of your unbelief. (See John 3:15-18.) But Belief alone is NOT automatic salvation. Belief brings Holy Spirit conviction of sin and the question “… What must we do?” Not one scripture says salvation is at the instant of belief! You are NOT saved “the instant you believe!”

Those who believe ask: “Men and brethren, what must we do?” (Acts 2:37). Belief is shown by the fact “…they were pricked in their heart…”, then by their question, and finally by their obedience to the command given in response to their question.

The command to those who have already believed and therefore become convicted is: “Repent…” (Acts 2:38). Since John the Baptist, Jesus, Peter and Paul all said to repent, how dare anyone say any less and still claim to teach the Gospel message?

But the answer does not stop with repentance. The question is, “. . . what must we do?” The answer to believers continues, “. . . be baptized  every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins . . . .” Water baptism is burial of the old “I am just human” nature which died in repentance and our resurrection with Jesus to walk in newness of life, (Romans 6:1-4). Baptism in water in the name of Jesus Christ is for (which in this context can only mean “to receive, to obtain, to get, or to have”) the forgiveness (remission) of sins. Your dictionary says that remission and forgiveness mean the exact same thing with remission having one more meaning, the removal of disease symptoms (the disease of sin!). So the Bible quite clearly teaches you must be baptized in Jesus’ name to be forgiven of your sins.

Finally, God’s promise is: “… and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” The first Bible evidence of believers being accepted by God was that they spoke in tongues. (See Acts 2:41; 8:12-19; 9:1-18; 10:44-48; 11:15-17; 16:15, 30-34; 18:8; 19:1-6.)

You don’t have to hope you are born again, You can KNOW you are on the only straight and narrow road to Heaven.
