Turn On!

“Hey! What’s with you? C’mon and live a little! Turn ON!"

“Whatcha mean?”

“Why man, this is where it’s at! We got the stuff! You know, the REAL Stuff!”

“You mean?”

“Yeah man, thass right. We got the goods. C’mon. Take a drag and get turned on.”

So you took that first drag. Not bad. In fact, kind of neat. Soon you were using marijuana regularly.
Before long, trips on grass were not enough and you wanted something with more high to it. Your friends turned you on to first one thing and then another. You took a sugar cube with LSD on it. This trip, you saw all kinds of beautiful colors and floated away into an indescribably beautiful euphoria. “Man, this IS living!” you exclaimed. But soon that got old, too. Other friends convinced you that “acid” was too dangerous and the high couldn’t compare with “crack”. “Makes your mind expand more. You’ll see things you never dreamed of. And you’ll have peace.” Peace? That’s really what you wanted!  But somehow, it never came. Instead, now, your peace was disturbed by the problem of somehow getting the money you needed to support your habit. More problems meant more need for more drugs to help you face life and the cost of you habit skyrocketed to more than a hundred dollars a day. Your body hurt when you couldn’t get more and you’d do anything to get it.

Over the next several years, you were arrested many times for stealing and each time you returned to the street to continue your habit. A judge sent you to a hospital to be cured, but as soon as you got back on the street, you got with your old friends and were right back on crack. The world is a zillion miles away. You are alone. Confused.

You would like to be free, so you begin trying uppers and downers to try to find your own substitute for “crack” and have some real nightmarish trips. Then even “crack” doesn’t work for you. Your body is only a shell kept moving by drugs.

About this time, a friend who got turned on in a different way begins to have a strong urge to look you up. Knowing the way you had been going, he visits a known hang-out for addicts and there he finds you. He begins to tell you about how he gets turned on and  never has a bad trip. How he doesn’t always have to be trying to find a way to get money to fix his habit. How he doesn’t get the shakes from withdrawal. He says he really does have peace and joy. He tells you that he knows you can turn on the same way and get free from the habit that has become your boss and dictator.

But you were fed up with established religion and sick of much of the hypocrisy of much of American society. Right that moment, you were hurting for a fix and you asked your friend to give you some money to buy more crack, but he wouldn’t. Instead, he began to pray for you. Pray? Man! What good was praying? But there was something about that simple prayer. “Dear heavenly Father, I come in Jesus’ name with my friend here. He has a problem that is too big for him or me to solve, but I know You can deliver him and set him free right now. So Lord, I ask you to come into his life right now and set him free. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Somehow, the urgency for a fix seemed to ease off and your friend began to talk to you. “I know you have been turned off by religion before because so many just try to tell you what you should do but don’t give you any strength or power to help you do it. But ‘…God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.’ (John 3:16). If you believe that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God who came to be the Lamb of God to be sacrificed for your sins and you believe that He did pay the whole price for your salvation, I know you will feel pricked in your heart that you are a sinner and need Him, you have feel conviction because of your saving faith.“

The Apostle Peter told the first believers to, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to everyone who comes after, even as many as the Lord our God shall call,’ (Acts 2:38, 39 RSV). The Apostle Paul said, ‘Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new,’ (2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV). And, ‘For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ,’ (Galatians 3:27 RSV). This means you take on His likeness and qualities.”

Maybe this is the answer to your needs!  You pray and as your friend prays with you, you feel a new sense of confidence, peace and joy you never knew before. You go to your friend’s church and are baptized into Jesus Christ. Because you really meant business with God, your belief was sincere, your baptism in the name of Jesus Christ scriptural, you came out of the water speaking a language you never learned in praises to God for His love and mercy.  Suddenly, you are turned on by the POWER of God! It is really a great trip! Before, when you got high on drugs, it was as if you were powered by a small flashlight battery. Now, full of the Holy Spirit, you are turned on by the POWERHOUSE of Almighty GOD!
